A recent workforce summit hosted by the Ohio Chamber of Commerce highlighted the challenges facing industry and employers in the state, as well as throughout the nation, when faced with a growing economy and tight labor force. We know from research reported by the National Science Board that the STEM workforce helps fuel the nation’s innovation and economic growth. In fact, the STEM workforce accounted for 24%, or 36.8 million workers, in 2021. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment in STEM occupations will outpace that of non-STEM occupations, with the fastest growth expected among science and engineering jobs. Combine that with what one professional from JobsOhio called a “once in a generation opportunity is the state’s economy” and the need for greater STEM opportunities for all students is clear.
