Banafsheh Khakipoor
Integrated Bioscience Biomimicry Fellow
Banafsheh Khakipoor completed her undergraduate studies in computer science in University of Wollongong, Dubai branch. Then, worked for two years as software engineer in Invensense Inc, Dubai branch. Followed by a postgraduate degree in bioinformatics at Aalto University of Finland. She learned about biomimicry at her senior year and as her interest grow in Biomimicry, she made her way to Akron to join 4th cohort of Biomimicry fellowship program at University of Akron. It is the only biomimicry PhD program she found that also allows her to work with industry to promote biomimicry. She works with TIES to create k-12 curriculum that uses biomimicry, her passion is for students to rediscover and get in touch with nature again, while learning about abstract topics in math, physics, programming, and many more.

Her advisor is Dr. Moore and her projects involves a combination of Biomimicry curriculum development in STEM as well as deep learning algorithms to track the ecological changes in lake Erie, with focus on dead-zones and Harmful algal bloom in Avon Lake.
